The sixth edition of SmartCards Expo 2004 held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India, from September 2-4, 2004. Co-located with the main event, were e-Security 2004 /RFidIndia Expo2004.
The exposition was organized by Electronics Today, India`s first Techno- Economic Electronics monthly journal. The event was being sponsored by Department of Information Technology- Government of India and co- sponsored by Software technology Park of India (STPI), Smart Card Forum of India (SCAFI), Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT), Smart Card Alliance to name a few.
``Ever since its launch in 1999, SmartCards Expo has spearheaded the Smart Card Revolution in India. It has played a significant role in creating awareness about the smart card technology and its applications in the country,`` says S Swarn, Organiser of the event. It has played the pioneering role in proliferating into newer application areas in India, which include ID and Access Control, Driving license and vehicle registration, retail, loyalty, banking and finance, close user group applications, healthcare, transit and fare collection, toll collections and many others, he adds. Currently, smart card base in India is estimated at about 40 million. This is projected to cross 400 million numbers in next few years which show the potentials of Indian smart card market potentials.
RFidIndia Expo 2004, co-located with SmartCards Expo 2004, Asia`s largest Smart Card exposition, and e-Security 2004, is being organised in India for the first time, to create awareness about the RFID technology and highlight its applications.
Along with the main event, technical workshops and seminars were organized to highlight the advancements in smart card technologies and RFID as well. A technical workshop was organized on August 31- September 01 on Evoloution of RFID and its usage, Designing RFID application, Biometrics for Smart Card Security and Financial Services and Security. The main speakers of the conference were Dr Jean- Pierre Benhammou, Atmel Corp., USA, Vidya Sirsi, California Card Systems, USA for RFID presentations and Y D Wadaskar, Founder and CEO, WYSE Biometrics Systems Pvt Ltd and Mohammad Sadiq, Technical Manager, Financial Services and Security, Gemplus, SAARC Region presented papers on smart cards.
``The exhibition was a forum to present the `smart technologies` and the advancements at a single platform and we get to know about them in details,`` says a visitor. These exhibition reflect ongoing quest of the industry to adopt new things and are very beneficial for India in terms of competing with the global giants.
