An evening programme was also organised to facilitate Sanat Shah of Manugraph Industries for a life time pursuing excellence. Other dignitaries included Mohit Jain, Director, Business & Commercial, Bennet Colemen and Arun Mehta, Past President, AIFMP.

Driven by a buoyant economy touching a growth rate of almost 10 per cent per annum, increasing consumerism, a boom in organised retail and a thriving FMCG market, the Indian label industry is seeing unprecedented activity. It is expected to hit the USD 1 billion mark in revenues during 2007 and will grow at over 20 per cent per annum till at least 2010; by then, it will be producing 6.5 per cent of the world's output of labels. The industry is extremely dynamic and is equipping itself not only to double output by the end of this decade but also to bring in cutting edge technologies to move into value-added labeling systems.

“There is a lot of room for new entrants and commercial printers anyway have an advantage in the way that they already possess great skills in printing and handling almost all the label substrates involved. Technology-wise, all they need to do is to integrate narrow web inline conversion processes with existing operations,” said Anil Arora on behalf of India Label Show, one of the sponsors.

“The major objectives of the Seminar is to lay out opportunities and potential applications that are developing in the Label market and what technology options are available using various narrow web inline conversion processes,” said Anand Limaye, President of Mumbai Mudrak Sangh. MMS has focused on one such contemporary subject in each of the previous annual events.

This year's event was supported by Kodak, Micro Inks, the Huber Group and Chemo and sponsored by Flexo Image Graphics, HP Packard and India Label Show 2008. The event was co-organised by Print-Packaging.com.

The Seminar started off with an audio-visual presentation by Kodak's Regional Manager Dnyanesh Bidkar on the range of solutions offered by their Graphic Products Division for the Packaging and Label industries.

This was followed by a paper entitled “From Commercial Printing To Label Printing” presented by Ms. Amila Singhvi, Managing Director of International Print-O-Pac Ltd. (IPP). IPP started off as commercial printers and were one of the first people in that segment to diversify into label production. She talked about the process options available and how IPP's transition into the Packaging and Label markets had been a rewarding experience.

P. Dasgupta, General Manager Packaging Development of Hindustan Lever then presented the end-users' perspective and elaborated on the emerging trends in labeling applications. In his paper, entitled “Opportunities in Labels for Commercial Printers An End-user Perspective”, he highlighted the willingness of industry to look for better and higher value systems if they could provide superior aesthetics and functional properties.

He was followed by Manish Kapoor, Sales Manager of Flexo Image Graphics (who represent Mark Andy the world's leading supplier of label printing/decoration presses as well as other leading lights like Trucolour, Comco and Rotoflex) who presented his paper “Opprtunities For Commercial Printers In Inline Narrow Web Conversion Of Labels”. He pointed out that several technology options are available and a label manufacturer needs to first work out what capabilities are necessary. The one big plus factor is that different print and decoration can be combined into a single inline operation by way of a Combination Press, details of which can be put together by suppliers like Mark Andy.

K. Nagesh, Country Manager India and SriLanka for HP Indigo then talked about “Opportunities in Digital Printing of Labels for Commercial Printings”. He said digital printing is now the only process option available for high quality reproduction when labels are required in small quantities. It presents a highly suitable option for “on demand” printing without the usual unproductive lead-times needed for pre-press plate production and downtime for press set-up. He also said that digital printing was picking up in the developed world and that HP Indigo is currently the world's largest supplier of digital presses and the fourth overall when all kinds of label presses are considered.

Panel Discussion on “Opportunities In Labels For Commercial Printers” -H S Sahni, Nagesh Karuturi, Manish Kapoor, P. Dasgupta, Amila Singhvi and Arun Rawat

He was followed by Harveer Singh Sahni, Managing Director of Weldon Celloplast and one of India's leading label-stock manufacturers who presented an “Overview of the Label Industry in India”. He elaborated on the industry trends and said there would be an increasing shift from conventional wet glue-applied labels to self-adhesive and other value-added systems like shrink labels, smart labels and security labels.

The finale was a panel discussion moderated by S. Chidambar, a leading industry consultant and specialist on Packaging, Printing and Plastics. The panel comprised of all the previous speakers and Mr. Arun Rawat, a well-known Mumbai manufacturer of labels who had also made a very successful foray from commercial printing to label production.

Chidambar pointed out the significant opportunities that are going to emerge in Packaging, especially the Label segment, and how commercial printers, with their acknowledged skills in printing/decoration and handling of various substrates, could leverage these strengths by capitalising on the potential areas of growth through the integration of suitable technologies into their existing operations. The panel discussion generated lively interaction with the audience on subjects ranging from comparison and rating of print processes from a quality point of view to production costs and end-user preferences.
