Fashion fraternity needs to create brands
Indian designers should exploit their brand equity and work towards creating designer labels. India can boost of talented designers, but we do have designer labels. At the business of fashion seminar, Simran Singh of Fashion Design Council of India emphasized the need for designer brands. Couture or signature brands, which are highly priced, account for only 2% of the market share. The diffusion brands, which reach out to a slightly wider audience, have a market share of 8-10 %. It is the prêt line, which contribute to bulk of the business and have a market share of 90%. Ms. Singh said that the western method of creating a designer brand should be adopted. The designer should select an audience and make a business plan. To sell, they can hire agents, meet buyers or sell through retail malls. To build up their brand equity, they can take part in fashion shows.
