In-Mould Labels Are Coming
Seminar lays the roadmap for kick-starting usage in India

Yupo corporation, DaiEi Papers, Mudrika Labels (P) Limited and Empire Plastics Limited came together to organise the first ever In-Mould Labeling (IML) seminar in the country. The daylong event happened on the 21 June at the Hyatt Regency at Mumbai and was attended by over 80 delegates from companies that were predominately moulders and end users with a sprinkling of printers, industrial suppliers and the media.

The seminar started with H Adachi of DaiEi Papers International Corporation giving an overview of the company followed by J Yasuda of Yupo giving a world market overview of IML. R Suzuki of Yupo followed with a presentation on the IML trends in China and S Inazaki of the same company gave a summary of the Japanese market trends.

Suzuki stressed on the Chinese market which it entered in 2002 at a very nascent stage and contributed to its 140% average annual growth ever since. Yupo claims a 90% share of the substrate market for IML in China and is keen to use its knowledge of that country to kick-start the market in India.

Yupo lays great store in developing and strengthening the value chain of producing In-mould labels and has been working for the past one and a half years with Indian printers, moulders and mould & machinery manufacturers and has developed the local skills in its use in blow moulded containers to the levels where they are now actively promoting the technology to the end users. It is simultaneously inviting more printers and moulders on to the bandwagon while it moves to the next step of developing the resources for using the technique in injection moulded and thermoformed containers or other plastic objects.

Manish Desai of Mudrika labels has been tied in with the exercise from its start and he spoke about the scope of IML in India. Desai brought out the comparative costs with PS labels and also identified the sectors in which IML can make easy inroads.

Pandya of Empire Plastics spoke at length about the IML in the blow moulding process, its strengths and pitfalls. He spoke from the experience of being involved in the development and use of IML in the Daman factory of the company.

A B Gupta, Managing Director of Empire Plastics joined the other speakers on the head table to take on the questions at the close of the first half of the session.

The second half of the seminar was devoted to the trends and developments in IML techniques in Injection moulding with the presentations from Sumitomo Heavy industries.
