Saket Bhatia, Senior Vice President- Marketing, HTWL speaks on successful strategies of company.

Hindustan Tin Works Ltd. (HTWL) is one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of small size metal cans built-up & flattened, printed & unprinted tin sheets and components in India. The company has been producing and exporting top quality cans to 18 different countries to suit the wide ranging demands of manufacturers and consumers. As HTWL completes 50 years of can making this year, Saket Bhatia, Senior Vice President- Marketing, HTWL spoke on the new innovations and the successful strategies followed by the company to stand as a pioneer in the can making industry.

How do you see the current Indian tin packaging industry? Where would you place HTWL in this scenario?
The 'tin can' is more than 200 years old and offers highest shelf life and appeal as compared to the other substitute packing materials. India is growing at an approximate rate of 7-9 percent per annum. In this scenario HTWL continues to be bullish with some of its major customers aiming to double their turnover in the next three years.

Take the food processing sector for example, which is set to attract larger investments in the coming years. For now it secures 40 percent of our sales turnover. As Tin cans are one of the major packaging medium, we are expecting continuous growth in the sector.

Tell us about the emerging trends in tin packaging.
In last few years we have seen tremendous growth in retail market and hence the thrust is on brand rather than commodity. With this visible shift in customer perspective, HTWL has launched four different concepts of cans to make its product stand out on the shelf. The company has come up with the aersosl cans used for sprays, deodorants & room freshener; shaped cans for all food and non- food application, which includes slip lid cans as a secondary pack for tea/coffee pouches, cookies, can with spout for lubricants, syrups & other liquid products and two-piece beverage cans in a joint venture with Rexam.

What are the advantages HTWL offers to its customers?
Well, I would say most importantly reliability. HTWL has been and will continue to be a reliable supplier to all its customer worldwide .Our main focus is on quality, pricing and service through timely delivery and after sales support. We are an ISO 9000: 2001 company and have systems which can meet high volume requirements of varied cans on time. Our plant is continuously upgraded with state - of- the- art equipments, all imported from European countries, which have definitely helped us in the longer run to minimise break downs.

In last few months the price of tinplate has increased by more than 50 percent making it less competitive against other methods of packaging. In this scenario what are your initiatives to maintain foothold in the market?
HTWL has invested tremendously on R&D and new technologies to reduce wall thickness of cans and provide better strength simultaneously. Secondly, with the government specifically focusing on the steel industry, prices are already on the downward trend in India. We are confident that this would be one of the major factors to drive growth in coming years.
