Barcoding Made Mandatory
Retail chains stress on barcoding for consumer products
EAN barcoding for consumer product companies has been made mandatory by the organized retail chains like Food World. The companies have been given a year’s time to comply. ``While most Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies have started to barcode their products, it is the smaller manufacturers of various products that would have to undertake barcoding by 2006 if they intend to retail their products at Food World,’’ said K Radhakrishnan, Food World VP, Merchandising while speaking at a gathering of leading FMCG manufacturers and retailers for the ECR (efficient consumer response) India meet, which announced the launch of GDS services (global data synchronization) – a common standards compliant information data pool.
European Article Numbering-Uniform Code Council (EAN.UCC) is an international organisation of product barcodes that is printed on everything that is sold in retail stores the world over.
